This original still life of a chair “dressed” in a black mantilla and “shod” with white heeled pumps testifies to the painter’s attachment to Spanish folklore, which was more alive than ever in the Spain of the 1960s.
The garnet-red colour of the black wooden openwork chair seat and the fabric under the mantilla are enhanced by the cool green and blue colours of the floor and wall in the background.
Worn like a tricolour scarf, the beautiful mantilla crosses the canvas at an angle and the shoes under the chair questions us about the manola.
