Guatemalan women, Chichicastenango: the ages of life

A frieze-like composition of a group of Guatemalan women, whose black braids rolled up on light-coloured fabrics give rhythm to the canvas with their warm and luminous alternations. As the title suggests, we can see the different generations all imposing the uniqueness and beauty of their hair in the foreground.

Facing a rectilinear decor of white canvases and Mayan fabrics treated in pictorial opposition in the upper part of the canvas, the busts of the armless women parade in the foreground, like spinning pins aligned on the merry-go-round of life.

Guatemala and Mexico, visited by the artist in 1973, created a whole series of paintings full of humanity paying homage to the strength of the silent, colourful and imperturbable Mayan female world.
