Full-length portrait of a Spanish woman with short black hair on both sides of her head, wearing a narrow white skirt with ruffles ending at the knees and a bright red blouse.
Sitting behind the diamond-tipped cabinet typical of the artist’s Paris studio, next to a round table covered with a large yellow tablecloth and a small bouquet, her eyes half-closed, her hands clasped over her skirt with a yellow fan in her right hand, The model seems to be waiting, with her back slightly stooped, for the end of the pose, which we can guess is long, to allow the artist to capture the light reflections on the model’s blouse, arms and bare legs, leaving the young woman’s face in shadow.
Warm yellow colours dominate with bright reds for the bodice and shoes. The brushes of light, yellow on the carpet and white on the wall, at the bottom right of the canvas in response to the yellow tablecloth, seem to surround the model like a mandorla.
The title “Homage to Goya” reflects the artist’s deep admiration for the Spanish master, whose last painting “The Milkmaid of Bordeaux” shows a young woman in the same stooped attitude.
The model is Juana-Mari, a Spanish student in Paris, friend of his youthful friend Maria-Eugénia Huder, who often welcomed the artist during his numerous stays in Pamplona, Spain. She often served as a model in the artist’s compositions.
