The watermelon, the main subject of this still life, is presented open, placed on a table, simply surrounded by a bunch of red peppers on the left and by a braid of garlic on the right.
The watermelon chunk is treated in solid colours, reflecting the fleshy texture of the cut slice.
The blood red of the watermelon is reinforced by the dark green of its skin and seeds, by the more sober warm colours of the table and the wall, and by the white-grey-blue of the garlies illuminated by a low light.
The angled framing of the table creates a rotating movement of the eye around the open fruit.
This painting, saturated with red and volume, in praise of the basic elements of Spanish cooking, creates a particularly successful impression of a still life full of life and spicy flavours, in the image of Germaine Lacaze’s painting.
