This dazzling autumnal still life is dominated by a rectangular table in a view from above lit from behind.
In the foreground is a woven basket filled with fruit, brown and red-orange with a dark blue shadow placed before our eyes. In the background, on the edge of the table, a round ultramarine blue pitcher with a branch of golden chestnut and on the left a white earthenware pot with four large yellow and orange flowers.
The unobstructed view from the left edge of the table gives depth to the composition, which is reinforced by a Lorraine chair seen at angle. A tree-like background is just suggested with a tree with yellow leaves on the right and a rather cloudy sky of milky pink white.
The lobes of the chestnut leaves give the composition a dynamic feel, as does the circular shape of the basket, which is well isolated at the front and contrasts with the two straight edges of the table.
The table with its blue tones contains a few chestnuts in the foreground. The palette of the canvas is glowing : red, russet, orange, yellow, then blue, violet, and ultramarine. Even the colour of the white earthenware pot turns blue. Only a small white spot on the base of the pot allows the eye to rest.
