Classic view of the painters of Venice: the end of the Grand Canal, downstream from the Accademia Bridge, towards the Bacino, between two successions of palaces disappearing into the horizon, where the water and the sky meet, with the domes of the Church of the Salute on the right, in the background.
A few red and white dukes of Alba trace verticals.
The real subject of the painting is the turquoise and jade green water of the Grand Canal, always in motion, illuminated by the sky and enhanced by the warm colours of the façades.
For Germaine Lacaze, the architecture of the Grand Canal organises a permanent dialogue between sky and water, between solid and liquid elements. The three steps on the right of the water porch, sinking into the water, seem to invite us to enter it and to join the sky through the water of the Grand Canal.
