In the foreground, in the centre of the canvas, the semicircle of an upright table with a bright yellow tablecloth, a basket of colourful orange and red fruit, a plate of cakes, a bottle, a lantern and a bouquet of Christmas roses in a blue and white earthenware vase. In the background, across the room, is a sofa with a purple top and multicoloured cushions, on the right of which rests a large ginger cat, the artist’s cat called Norange. A romantic black wooden chair, often painted, with a light purple fabric completes the left side of the canvas.
The beauty of the white flowers bursts forth against the warm tones in which the canvas is bathed. The balance of the masses and the planes of colour give an atmosphere of silent and nostalgic happiness.
With its three candles and three flutes of champagne, the painting perhaps also evokes the nostalgia of the artist’s family trio’s Christmases with her mother’s favourite flowers and her father’s bottle of champagne.
