Paulette in Villeneuve, portrait

The portrait of this blonde woman with dark eyes, sitting quietly at a table with fruit and flowers, uses a palette of a few dominant colours treated in light and dark tones. For the warm colours: the blond of the hair, the light pinkish yellow of the skin and the tablecloth, the orange of the cherries, apricots and the box of dominoes; for the cool colours, three dominants as well: the greens of the surrounding foliage, the luminous blues of the dress and the browns of the eyes and the grapes.

The purples of the flowers and the napkin complete the colour balance. The stable triangular composition of the figure on the left is articulated with the semicircle of the table and the objects placed on it. The model’s questioning eyebrow, her delicately face send a pensive gaze on the painter and on us.

This beautiful portrait, in which the reflections of light and shadow make the colours vibrate so well, expresses an obvious admiration between the painter and her model.

The model is Paulette Le Bitoux, née Lacaze, the artist’s first cousin, daughter of Charlotte and Edmond Lacaze,  brother of the artist’s father.
