This still life of fish and shellfish consists of red mullets in the centre of the canvas and two crabs (an edible crab and a spider) painted on its right half. The edible crab lies upside down on its shell, with its back legs erect. The spider has its large claws open in a half circle on the right edge of the canvas. Seaweed spreads across the top of the still life.
The fish and the crab are bright with light colours which contrast with the spider and the seaweed treated in dark colours.
The loose position of the fish and crabs gives the impression of a fishing return spilled onto the beach and captured by the painter’s eye.
This painting was exhibited on the walls of the Arcachon fish restaurant “Chez Yvette”.
