Quai des Grands-Augustins seen from the Pont-Neuf

This engraving shows the Quai des Grands Augustins on the left bank of the Seine seen from the Pont Neuf.

Although the Saint-Michel bridge and the bell tower of the Saint-Séverin church are recognisable, it is the “toboggan” descents of the quays, the “soapbox” volumes of the barges and the “skeleton” silhouettes of the plane trees rising towards the sky, only living creatures in the landscape, that make this visibly night-time view of Paris original.

The barges and the roofs structure the perspective between the sky and the Seine in a mirror image.

This engraving is part of a series of about ten landscapes of Paris.
