A play of light and original poses for these two young girls, seen standing facing up, returning from a walk, and posing on the landing of a small-paned French window, one, on the right, in white trousers, her left hand resting on a doorpost, the other, on the left, in white shorts and a large orange-pink hat, her right hand on the handle of the other door and her left arm resting on the shoulder of the first.
Verticals and diagonals radiate from the composition, even the arms of the two young girls are naturally linked in a broken line. Both bodies rest on their right leg, the left leg slightly bent.
As in an apparition, the light illuminates the figures from behind. They face us and seem to be waiting for our reaction before moving on.
Painted in Arcachon, the model on the left is Marie Forher, née Lacaze, daughter of Hélène and Paul Lacaze, first cousin of the artist’s father, with whom Germaine Lacaze spent many summers in the 1950s and 1960s.
