Toledo: Virgen del Valle at night

Superb panoramic view of Toledo in warm colours overlooking the green and ultramarine blue Tagus.

Under an incandescent sunset sky, the Santa Maria cathedral and the houses of the old town with their blue walls and red roofs emerge at the top of the canvas between two hills, including the Alcazar on the right, which is barely outlined. In the centre, a small road leads to a few houses by the river in the foreground.

The triangular shapes that structure the landscape converge in the centre of the canvas, which, as it moves towards the viewer, gives the foreground a beautiful magnifying glass effect, emphasised by the curve of the Tagus. The artist’s colourful brushstrokes build up the buildings as well as the bare, earthy hillsides and the flaming sky in the evening sun.

The dominant palette of glowing yellows, ochres and oranges, set off by touches of blues and greens, gives this painting a radiant warmth that perfectly symbolises the fascination the artist felt for the Spanish world.

A landscape often painted by painters in love with Spain, Germaine Lacaze’s beautiful vision favours both colour and form.
